The legs of all insects are made up of the same five basic parts. An insects leg is made up of the
femur, trochanter, coxa, tibia and tarus. These five parts can vary
greatly from one species to the next and can assist in their
identification. The coxa conects the leg to the thorax. The trochanter
acts as a joint between the coxa and femur. The Femur is usually
elongated and contains the major muscles used in running, and
jumping. The tibia is also ussually elongated and gives length and
flexablility to the entire leg. The tarsus serves as the insects foot
and has one to four segments. At the end of the tarsus is the claw. The
claw is used to hold the insect to different surfaces and to hold prey.
