Elateridae of the USA
Click Beetles

The family Elateridae has almost 900 represented species in North America1. Click beetles, as they are commonly called get their common name from unique ability to “click” their way out of trouble. When one is placed on its back the beetle will click, snapping it into the air with the hope of landing on its feet to scurry away to safety. I have found many species of Elateridae at night lights as well as under logs, tree bark, and forest debris.
