*These Springtail are very tiny. You will receive them in a 5/8 dram glass
vial with 70% ethyl alcohol.
These springtail are not only tiny, but somewhat tricky to
collect. Here is how I did it:
I was in by backyard in Little Rock, AR during the 1st week of November
2010. The was a nice day and the temperature was probably in the
mid 60's. I was turning over rocks looking for Earwigs when I noticed
very tiny white dots scurrying around in the dirt and debris. I scooped
up a sample of the dirt and debris for close inspection. I took the
sample into a workroom in my house affectionately known as "The Bug
Cave" and placed it into a shallow black tray. Using a small paint
brush, I sorted through the sample looking for the white dots against
the black color of the tray. A magnifying lens helped my 47 year old
eyes see more clearly. I noticed that when I touched the white dots they
sprung into the air and out of sight. To stop them from springing out of
sight I poured a half inch layer of ethanol into the tray. A few of the
white dots floated to the surface where I collected them with my tiny
paint brush. At that point I was able to view the creatures through a
field microscope and identify them as Pseudosinella rolfsi.
