The Earwig gets its common name from an old superstition.
The belief was that the insect would crawl inside of an
unlucky person's ear at night when he or she slept. While in
the ear it was thought that the insect would bite the victim
and cause the loss of all the hair on their head resulting
in the need for a wig.
