Diptera
The Order Diptera, aka "Flies", is characterized by
one pair of wings and sucking mouthparts. The second pair of wings is
reduced down to a knob-like structure called a halteres. The halteres
stabilizes or balances the insect while in flight. With 160,000 known
species of flies, about 20,000 species can be found in North America
North of Mexico. Flies can be collected a variety of ways depending on
the species. Collection methods include bait traps, night lights, sweep
nets, and aspirators.
