      How to Collect a Dragonfly: Collecting Dragonflies for your School insect collection

      Dragonflies are captivating insects known for their remarkable flying abilities and iridescent colors. Making a Dragonfly collection, whether for scientific purposes or as a hobby, requires skill, patience, and a deep respect for these magnificent creatures. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you collect dragonflies for your Dragonfly collection.

      1. Equipment

      Gathering the right equipment can make the process of Collecting dragonflies go much smoother:

      Net: A sturdy net for dragonflies is best with a long handle and fine mesh. The mesh should be soft to prevent damage to the dragonfly's delicate wings.

      Killing Jar: Used to euthanize the specimen. They are usually plastic jars containing a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover (acetone) or other suitable chemicals. I use freezing, if possible, to prevent specimen damage.

      Containers or Envelopes: Use a letter envelope to place your live specimen in to demobilize it until you can transfer it to a freezer for killing.

      2. The Collection Process How to Catch a dragonfly

      a. Finding Dragonflies:

      Dragonfly Habitats: Look around freshwater bodies like ponds, lakes, and streams.

      Time: The best time to catch dragonflies is early morning or late afternoon, when it's cooler, is ideal as dragonflies are less active then.

      b. Catching Dragonflies:

      Approach slowly and quietly.

      Aim the net in front of the dragonfly and swing it back swiftly, trapping the dragonfly inside.

      Reach your hand into the net and grab the dragonfly with the wings folded back. Its bite will not break the skin and does not hurt.

      c. Transferring to the freezer for killing. Freezing dragonflies is an easy way to kill the without damage. Place the Dragonfly into an envelope with the wings in the folded back position. Transfer the envelope with the dragonfly in it to the freezer as soon as possible.
